dance classes

MUsical  theatre

MSPA Musical Theatre photo
This dance style focuses on bringing the three skills of a performer together, dancing, acting and singing.  Our students develop many skills and increase their imagination and creativity through characterisation and storytelling.  We teach a wide variety of songs and routines from old and new Broadway musicals like School of Rock, Mary Poppins, Newsies, Chicago, Grease, Bring it on, Fosse, and so many more.  While ensuring to instill proper dance technique, teamwork skills and self-confidence, our students can confidently perform class routines in front of an audience.  The class is one hour long and consists of a warm-up, technical components such as posture and alignment exercises, footwork combinations, kicks, turns and leaps. This is followed by a dance routine learnt at the end, all within a fun, safe and encouraging environment.

contemporary

MSPA Contemporary Dance photo
Contemporary dance is a very expressive dance class that combines elements of jazz, lyrical and ballet.  It strives to connect the mind and the body while developing technical components such as posture, poise, balance, strength and agility.  The dance style is very interpretative and often focuses on emotions and storytelling while developing improvisational skills.

hip hop

MSPA Jazz Funk Photo
Hip Hop is a vibrant form of dance that incorporates different street dance styles and is typically danced to hip hop, R&B, funk or pop music.  It original comes from the Bronx, New York, but has deep historical and social roots in the African American culture.  Hip hop is a fun, energetic style that can bring out your fierce side.  Hip hop classes at MSPA encourage confidence, individuality and versatility all within a safe and enjoyable environment.

tap  Dancing

MSPA Tap Dancing photo
Tap builds strength in the legs and feet, in addition to increasing flexibility in the hips, knees and ankles. Tap dancing also develops a great sense of rhythm and timing. Here at MSPA we teach both Modern and Broadway Tap with a little Street Tap thrown in also. There are 2 class levels, Beginners & Intermediate. Each student is accessed and put into their level of capability.

Strength, Stretch & Technique   (SST )

SST, which stands for Strength, Stretch and Technique, is a class that focuses on body conditioning, flexibility practice and improving dance technique. For those interested in taking their dance training to the next level and diving deeper into the fundamentals of dance that will assist you in achieving those cool dance skills you see on "Dance Moms", then this is the class for you. Here is a breakdown of what's involved in this type of dance class.
Strength: This part of the class will look at targeting specific muscle groups and parts of the body needed to maximise the dancer's abilities and prevent injury.  For example, the glute muscle is a dancer's power house and is used to achieve explosive jumps/leaps in dance, while the abdominals are used for stability and control.  If these muscles are weak, dancers will struggle developing such dance skills.  By increasing the dancer's awareness of how to use their body effectively and to their advantage, they will be able to move more freely and their dance level will improve a lot more quickly.  Regardless of age or level, the strength work in class will be done in a fun, motivational and safe environment for all students.
Stretch:  In the stretching part of class, students will improve their mobility and flexibility .  Dance teacher, Leah Meagher is a certified flexibility teacher under the world renowned "Alixa Flexibility" and will take the students through a number of exercises and progressions to reach their goals, mainly focusing on the hamstrings, quads, hip flexors, hips, shoulders, back and feet.  To achieve safe flexibility practice it must go hand in hand with strength training to minimise risk of injury and so dancers are able to execute their flexibility with control and power. Progressions and modifications can be used for each exercise to better suit all students' of varying levels & abilities.
Technique: Dance technique is the foundation and language of the art form.  It is the basis of all dance fundamentals from holding your body correctly to performing skills properly.  Strong technique is valuable across all dance styles.  In this section of class, students will be learning about jazz technique with hints of basic ballet technique. More specifically, students will work on alignment, posture, balance and proprioception, coordination and isolations, footwork, parallel and
turn out combinations, leg extensions, turns, kicks and leaps across the floor.  Strength and flexibility are two tools that help progress a dancer's technique, as well as artistry and performance.  All of which the students will learn in this class with the aim of producing well rounded, confident, diligent and passionate dancers.
Every SST student will be required to bring two yoga blocks, a resistance band and a yoga mat with them to class each week.

Our adult dance class is catered for adults 30+ who enjoy dancing but may have to dust off their dancing shoes a bit.  The aim of this class would be to bring together musical lovers to have a weekly boogie to boost confidence and enjoyment in dance again.
This type of class is ideal to keep fit and connect with new and old friends.  Whether you are a complete beginner or have some experience in dance, this class is for you!
The music from classic Broadway Showstoppers and hits throughout the decades are sure to get you smiling and sweating.

singing  CLASSES

Picture
At MSPA, singing classes places equal emphasis on solid healthy vocal technique and performance.  Students are encouraged to expand their vocabulary, diction and imagination through singing.  They also explore the correct use of breath and laryngeal movement, projection and technique in a safe, friendly environment.
The repertoire primarily comes from musical theatre, but traditional, classical and pop are also included when appropriate.
Singing classes are offered in small groups for younger students and beginners.  Older students who are getting ready for Junior or Leaving Cert practicals, or preparing for college auditions are encouraged to take private lessons.  Our students will then have an opportunity to enter competitions such as The Feis Ceoil and Inter-schools Music Festival.

drama classes

creative  drama

MSPA Creative Drama
Creative drama is a chance for children to learn and play in a controlled and secure environment.  They learn to push their own boundaries of confidence, preparing them for world world full of challenges and obstacles.  Creative drama gives children the sense of self, to be confident and have empathy towards the feelings of others.
Creative drama can include dramatic play, improvisation, acting, mime, story telling, imagination journeys, theatre games and dance.  Students are also involved in various projects like short stories, monologues & short movies.  This develops them in many other areas of acting.  They learn to act for stage & camera, prepare a role and interact with other actors.
Every year, our students have the opportunity to enter the Feis Maitiu drama competition to showcase their monologues or duologues in the Mill Theatre, Dundrum.

exam  drama-riam

MSPA Exam Drama
Children will study performance, literature, public speaking and interview technique in our Speech and Drama Examination Class, with the intention to sit grade exams in June or December. The Speech & Drama examinations from Kindergarten to Senior Cert encompass performance in poetry, prose, drama, mime, reading, theory and conversation in a fun and comfortable environment.  We must ensure that enough time is allocated to each student, therefore we keep class numbers between 12 and 14.  The skills obtained from graded exams encourage pupils to be articulate, strong minded and confident. All of which children carry forward to adult life.  This class needs to be pre-booked.
